About STEM training at Unity Academy

STEM (Science- Technology- Engineering– Mathematics) is a training program based on the methods of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The children take part in experiments and are encouraged to share their ideas and contribute to the creation of group projects. The active participation and learning through practice and the ability to experience all the lessons learned, are the main principles enshrined in each session.

STEM is a new way to study the world around us. Combine different methods of examination and exploration of current topics.

STEM is suitable for children from 1st-12th grade, as the program is consistent with the age of the students.

About the training methodology

All lessons are developed on the basis of the German STEM training system  – the most effective and widely used in the countries of Western Europe and the United States. It is based on project development and it uses Fishertechnik’s constructors, especially designed for that purpose.

One of the main advantages of STEM training is the integration of the individual subjects in the curriculum for the realization of a large project. This allows the children to understand the relationships between the school subjects and it helps them to ask themselves questions like: “Why do I need this knowledge?”, “Where am I going to use what I’ve learnt?”

The STEM training allows deeper examination of an issue. The project gives the opportunity to different groups of children to reach several  complete solutions to the same problem. Work on solving a particular problem teaches children to plan, organize, and explore. Practical activities contribute to developing the abilities and skills necessary for the realization of the project. Kids use the research to create the design, testing it, evaluate and make adjustments.

The term “engineering” implies a mathematical evaluation of the design. The analysis allows children from 5th grade up to create mathematical models so to be able to understand the meaning of the so called informed decision and increase the speed with which decisions are made. Once made the analysis, you may sit and evaluate prototypes. Followed by further analysis and improving the design.

After reaching a reasonable design, kids, like a true inventors prepare a final presentation of their invention. Their sketches, drafts, notes, studies, analysis of the data and everything that contributed to the final design are included. Also, children present a reasonable explanation of their choice of solution. The ability to explain the stages through which they have reached the final decision, allows the child to transform knowledge into understanding and practice; and their assessment leads to the application of that knowledge and building capacity for analysis and synthesis.
